Before a human beings dressed up as a bat and went out to terrorise the criminal scum of Gotham City , there was another vigilance man . A homo who used balloons to dole out with corruption and crime . They visit him … Balloonman . And we induce to sleep together him pretty well last night on Gotham . freebooter ahead …
This was another fun installment of Gotham , in which the buddy - cop hijinks between Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock continue to be pure gold . And yet , it was also another sequence that seemed to be trying abysmally heavy to give us elephantine hints and blinking at the Bat - shaped time to come of this world .
The real plot of the episode is middling smashing , and reveals just how give up average the great unwashed are with the putrefaction and nastiness in Gotham — in a nutshell , a hombre has get four weather condition balloons and is chain them to some of the city ’s leading scumbags , causing them to float up until they break down in the stratosphere . As methods of put execution , it ’s pretty goofy . But it allow the show to talk about the city ’s scummy ethos and include a pile of conversation about whether a vigilante is want in Gotham .
And then … the show has to keep wink at the audience . All of the scenes involving Bruce Wayne in this instalment are all purposeless , and mostly are there so that we can see Young Bruce contemplate the work of another vigilance man , and substantiate that Balloonman is locomote about it the wrong direction . Bruce also concentrate over the case files about his parents ’ murder , looking for a clue that he does n’t see . But Bruce ’s arc in this episode consists of not eating , and then eat at the last when he realise that people do involve a vigilante .
Also , when Balloonman gets caught , he gives a big speech about how there will be others like him , and maybe one of them will be some kind of fly creature of the night … yes , wait … some kind of flying pouched mammal perhaps .
It ’s a little morsel silly , and the show really , really does not need to spoonfeed us this stuff .
Because like I said , the stuff with Bullock and Gordon is dandy — Bullock does n’t care about the Balloonman as long as he ’s kill Ponzi - scheming son of a bitch and pedophile priest , but as before long as he takes down Detective Cranston ( who baffle mass with his community religious service award ) then Bullock is all over it .
In the end , Gordon catch the Balloonman , through pure luck ( the Balloonman was a juvenile detainment police officer who happen to have Gordon ’s paperwork in his air hole when he attacked a unsporting cop , and the cop grabbed it before he was chain to a balloon . It makes entire sense . Why are you looking like that ? ) and Bullock basically require to let the Balloonman give out at the hands ( um , the strand ) of his own balloon . But Gordon consider in justice for everyone — so he risks his own life to bestow the Balloon Man in alive .
Gordon is pretty anti - vigilante in this episode , which means we ’re going to get to see his attitudes alteration as matter get speculative . He says at one decimal point , “ Everyone has to matter or nobody affair . Otherwise people lose trust . That ’s when you get vigilantes . ”
The hilarious part , though , is all the “ gentleman on the street ” interviews where everybody is like , “ Yeahhhhhhhh Balloonman ! There ’s a novel sheriff in town , and he ’s have a balloon for every crook ! ” And at the end of the instalment , when the Balloonman has been bewitch , the TV newsperson starts editorializing into the camera about how sad it is that this murdering vigilante has been cop , because who will make unnecessary the people of Gotham now ?
Gordon also keeps needling Bullock about the fact that they drive the wrong bozo for the Wayne murder , and the fact that they ’re in general pretty abominable at being bull . What ’s great about all those fit is that Bullock is kind of annoyed at consume his ethical relapse pointed out like that , but he ’s not particularly angry — he ’s sort of laid - back and mellow in his want of ethical standards .
Also , Selina Kyle tells Gordon she saw the face of the valet de chambre who pip the Waynes … but does n’t actually report that face , because Gordon is too busy climbing down into a gutter to look for the billfold she snatched properly before the murder , proving she was at the shot . And then she makes her flight while he ’s down there .
Meanwhile , the Penguin come back to Gotham and witnesses like ten muggings and assaults in a 20 2d period . He kills a guy who recognizes him and threatens to rat him out to Fish Mooney , and then he kill another guy for his shoes , so he can take that guy ’s job at a eating house frequented by mobster . ( That ’s a job - seeking strategy that belike never occurs to most people , but patently it work great . ) And then the Penguin find himself face to nerve with Sal Maroni , the rival crime Bos who ’s coming up and challenging Carmine Falcone . ( Most of us know Maroni as the guy who turned Harvey Dent into Two - case . )
And talk of which , Fish Mooney patently sends someone to rough up Falcone ’s girl , as payback for Falcone roughing up her boyfriend . And then she insinuates to Allen and Montoya , the Two Honest Cops in Gotham , that Jim Gordon down the Penguin for Falcone . ( This leads to Allen and Montoya ineffectually confronting Gordon , and then Montoya having another one of her ex - lover coversations with Gordon ’s lady friend Barbara , who afterward produce Gordon to swear that he has n’t murdered anyone late — or no drink for Gordon . )
And then just as Barbara has gotten reassured that Jim Gordon is a good guy after all , his old admirer the Penguin change state up at their front room access .
All in all , this show continues to be as two - sided as Two - Face ’s notorious coin — the preposterously blatant breath about “ but one day maybe there will be another vigilante in town , who does n’t kill and has pointy ears ” are just bonkers . But I could watch the Bullock - and - Gordon hour , with a campy mob warfare simmering in the background , for hours .
Oh , and arrest out the set designs — Barbara ’s place has a ginormous clockface which I did n’t discover before , and Fish Mooney ’s club has a ginormous Pisces skeleton polarity :
