Amazon just took a large step forward on a show that will cost importantly more than a dollar . A new serial publication based on Paul Verhoeven ’s 1987 classicRoboCophas been in the worksfor about a yearand now the streamer has setPeter Ocko ( Lodge 49 , Moonhaven)as its showrunner — andnone other than James Wanas one of the executive manufacturer .
The logline of the show , according toVariety , is “ A giant technical school empire collaborates with the local police section to introduce a technologically advanced enforcer to combat rising crime — a police police officer who ’s part man , part car . ” So , fundamentally , the plot of ground of the first movie .
Last year , RoboCopwasat the top of a tilt of propertiesAmazon wanted to rise after its acquisition of MGM . It ’s unclear exactly what direction the show will take , or how it will be different from other loop , but with Ocko ’s experience ( he ’s also worked onThe Leftovers , The Office , Elementary , Black Sails , andPushing Daisies ) and the vision of Wan ’s fellowship , Atomic Monster , you have a common sense it ’ll be tonally or thematically along the lines of that original pic .

Adored by both adults who got it , and kid who did not , it was a big enough success that it engender two continuation , was rebooted in 2014 , and has had multiple iterations on TV . None of the television versions were that memorable ( though a later ’ 80s inspire series did have 40 episodes ) , so you ’d imagine most multitude do n’t even knowRoboCopwas ever on the diminished screen .
Plus , this is Amazon . A company that spend about a gazillion dollar onLord of the Rings . RoboCopisn’t quiteLord of the Ringsin terms of name recognition but it ’s well - sleep together enough that you ’d assume it ’ll get a significant investment . Also , if the show is half as subversive , interesting , and fun as the original movie , it could be very challenging .
